Elcimaï Environnement will support the winners of the “50 Exemplary Project Owners” call for proposals launched by the DEMOCLES collaborative platform
After being tasked with developing a traceability model for all waste generated by demolition and renovation sites, Elcimaï Environnement, in partnership with Ginger-Deleo, will support the winners of the “50 Exemplary Project Owners” call for proposals launched by the DEMOCLES collaborative platform in conjunction with ADEME.
Following the passage of the law on waste reduction and the circular economy, the DEMOCLES collaborative platform brought together more than 300 construction industry stakeholders today at the Théâtre Rouge in the Jardin d’Acclimatation to discuss the challenge of construction waste management. Indeed, since the publication of the Circular Economy Roadmap (FREC) in March 2018, construction waste has taken center stage, driven by a shared commitment to adopting best practices that promote its recovery within a circular economy framework.
Numerous high-level experts were present to discuss regulatory changes, the traceability model for construction waste, and pre-demolition waste assessments as a value-creating decision-making tool. Nicolas Roussat of Elcimaï Environnement, who spoke during the roundtable dedicated to the call for projects, highlighted the essential role of project owners in evolving practices.
“It is the project owner, as the client, who holds the keys to moving toward more sustainable practices aligned with the circular economy. But this first requires them to undergo an internal transformation to better integrate waste management into their processes.”
This challenge of 46 million tons of waste per year makes the construction sector one of the main producers of waste in France. While inert waste is generally well managed, the same cannot be said for non-hazardous non-inert waste, where significant room for improvement exists. This progress will depend on the ability of the entire supply chain to create synergies. Project owners, project managers, construction companies, waste managers, and manufacturers are all expected to be key players in driving change toward better management and recovery of waste from construction sites.
On this occasion, the “50 Exemplary Project Owners” call for projects was also launched. Funded by ADEME and ecosystem, it aims to support public and private professional project owners in improving their practices regarding the planning and monitoring of construction waste management during major building demolition and renovation projects. It covers the entire national territory, including the overseas departments and regions (DROM).
The winners will receive support from the Elcimaï Environnement – Ginger-Deleo consortium to help them assess their current practices and propose concrete actions for implementing change. This support may take the form of a comprehensive approach (analysis of the project owner’s internal practices) or a targeted approach (testing these changes on an exemplary pilot site).
Through the work carried out in recent years, DEMOCLES has defined the foundations of best practices to be implemented to improve the management and recovery of waste generated by construction sites. Today, in addition to disseminating these best practices and training stakeholders, it is essential to ensure these recommendations are applied on construction sites, thereby moving from good intentions to implementation.
