Elcimaï Environnement has delivered a fire hydrant to Grenoble-Alpes Métropole for its new household packaging sorting center

Fire Safety in Sorting Centers

On average, a major fire occurs every month in household packaging sorting centers. These incidents cause significant damage and lead to production shutdowns, which significantly disrupt local communities’ recycling processes. The logistical, environmental, and financial challenges associated with fire risks are considerable. To mitigate these risks, it is essential to implement technical fire suppression solutions that are tailored to the risks, reliable, and compliant with standards, with the goal of quickly and effectively extinguishing a fire at its onset.

Elcimaï Environnement Installs a Fire Suppression Water Supply System

Grenoble-Alpes Métropole has commissioned Elcimaï Environnement to build a fire suppression water supply system designed to feed the automatic sprinkler-type fire suppression systems at its new household packaging sorting center, which was recently constructed and is currently in the commissioning phase.

The system includes a pumping station equipped with two redundant diesel motor-pumps, each with a flow rate of 600 m³/h, fed by an integrated 1,200 m³ tank. This tank consists of two interconnected tanks, each with a diameter of 11.5 m and a height of 7.30 m. The system has an operational autonomy of 120 minutes.

Since the facility is located near the Isère River, in a complex geotechnical environment and within seismic zone 4, special foundations—consisting of 130 micropiles drilled to a depth of 18 meters—were required.

“Built in accordance with the NFPA 20 (National Fire Protection Association) insurance standard, this water source is also designed to supply the automatic water-based fire suppression systems of the future waste-to-energy plant, which will be built and commissioned in 2028,” explains Julien Bourhis, Sales Director at Elcimaï Environnement. “The facility will therefore serve both industrial sites.”
