Innovation in Action : Practical Guides for Utilizing Waste Heat from Data Centers Locally, with Elcimaï and ADEME.

Waste heat is the heat generated by equipment whose primary function is not energy production (such as computer servers in data centers). This heat, referred to as “waste” because it is typically lost, can often be put to good use !

Two technical guides, developed through our collaboration with ADEME and drawing on the expertise of APL Data Center, offer an educational and informative approach to better utilize waste heat from data centers in France.

? Tools for local governments and data centers

These practical guides are designed as essential resources, offering an educational approach for both local governments and data centers. Whether you’re involved in local management, a decision-maker, or simply curious, these resources will shed light on best practices based on real-world experience.

? Key features of the practical guides

1️⃣ Education as our guiding principle : complex concepts are explained simply to facilitate understanding—this is the guiding principle we’ve adopted in our writing.

2️⃣ In-depth discussions with key stakeholders : an overview emerges from dialogue with key players in the sector (district heating operators, data center builders and operators, local governments, associations, etc.).

3️⃣ Early communication : communicating as early as possible in the project’s development is crucial ! At the heart of our recommendations, transparent dialogue from the outset is key to ensuring the success and acceptance of these still-novel initiatives.

4️⃣ Innovation to maximize co-benefits : practical advice and innovative solutions to address and adapt to the diverse needs across the region, transforming data centers—often energy-intensive—into positive drivers of the transition.
