The Elcimaï Group Delivers a "Zero Landfill" Waste Collection Center for Smictom Valcobreizh
The Elcimaï Group, through its subsidiaries Elcimaï Environnement and Elcimaï Ouest, has just delivered a new waste collection center in Liffré, near Rennes, for Smictom Valcobreizh.
Formed on January 1, 2020, through the merger of the SMICTOM des Forêts and the SMICTOM d’Ille et Rance, the waste management service encompasses 52 municipalities and 5 intermunicipal communities.
The project is part of a larger contract involving the construction of four recycling centers in Ille-et-Vilaine, in Tinténiac, Liffré, Combourg, and Melesse. The one in Tinténiac began operations in early March.
The Liffré waste collection center combines dock-side dumpsters with ground-level drop-off platforms for plant waste, construction debris, and wood. It is designed to sort 45 different types of waste and aims for zero landfill.
Spanning one hectare, the 167-square-meter building houses staff facilities, storage for hazardous waste, storage for electrical and electronic waste, as well as a 49-square-meter space for collecting reusable items. The latter is designed to operate using a “traditional” collection method, or potentially on the principle of a reverse supermarket.
Environmental requirements also extended to the construction. The framework and cladding are made of wood, and the walls are made of rammed earth. The reuse of salvageable materials was prioritized in the building (such as plumbing fixtures). Concrete slabs from the demolition of the previous waste collection center are being reused as mulch in the new green spaces.
The site, representing an investment of €1.8 million including tax, was designed by Sarah Fruit Architecte and 10i2la Architectes.
